Using third party images

While we strongly endorse the use of authentic photography of our students, staff, campuses and facilities, we know this is not always possible.

Sometimes, we need to use indicative photography, which may be sourced from approved third parties, usually referred to as ‘stock’. The use of stock images is subject to consultation with Marketing and Communications, and images should always adhere to our photographic styles.

Stock images may be used in circumstances such as:

  • Promoting an activity that is yet to happen
  • When children or vulnerable groups are heavily featured
  • Commissioning bespoke photography is not feasible
  • Where photography is provided by a partner organisation

In order to publish stock photography you must have a license agreement or evidence that the image is royalty free. You must not download images from other websites, or search engines, as these may be subject to copyright.

Things to avoid

Do not use images of scenarios that are clearly staged

Do not use images that have been heavily edited or filtered

Do not use images that are unsettling or contrary to our values

Do not use images that include obscure camera angles or lighting

Do not use images that are clearly in non-University environments

Do not use Illustrations or graphics without Marketing and Communications support
